Nottingham Forest worked to strengthen their squad during a relatively calm Transfer Deadline Day, avoiding the late-window chaos seen elsewhere.
The Reds made just one addition on the final day, bringing in Luca Netz from Borussia Mönchengladbach to reinforce their defensive options.
Earlier in the window, Forest had already secured the services of Lorenzo Lucca and Stefan Ortega, and overall the club’s recruitment strategy appeared measured and well thought out.
Forest were also interested in Arne Engels as the deadline approached, but that potential move collapsed after Celtic made it clear they were unwilling to part with the midfielder.
As the clock ticked down, it has now emerged that the Reds were pursuing yet another deal in a last push to add depth to their squad.
According to Fabrizio Romano, both Nottingham Forest and Roma attempted to sign Wolves left-back David Møller Wolfe for a fee of around £14 million in the final 24 hours of the window.
Wolfe has been Wolves’ first-choice left-back this season despite the club sitting at the bottom of the Premier League, and his performances attracted interest late on.
The 23-year-old has made 15 appearances since joining Wolves from AZ Alkmaar in the summer and has continued to feature regularly following Rob Edwards’ arrival. Former Wolves boss Vítor Pereira previously described Wolfe as a “quality” player, highlighting the potential he possesses at top-flight level.
However, Forest may ultimately feel they made the right call by opting for Netz instead. The German full-back, still only 22, already boasts over 100 Bundesliga appearances and arrived for a modest fee of just £2 million, significantly reducing the risk involved in the deal.
By contrast, Wolfe’s season has not been without issues, particularly given Wolves’ struggles and looming relegation battle.
Netz looks like a signing made with the future in mind, someone who can provide competition and cover for Neco Williams while developing further at the City Ground.
In comparison, a late move for Wolfe may have felt slightly desperate, and recruiting a defender from a side rooted to the bottom of the Premier League might not have sent the right message.
Forest’s more restrained approach, centred around value and long-term planning, could yet prove to be the smarter play.
