Derby County head coach John Eustace praised his players despite their narrow 2-1 home defeat to Ipswich Town, insisting he was proud of the way his side matched one of the league’s strongest teams at Pride Park.
The Rams went head-to-head with Kieran McKenna’s promotion contenders in an entertaining contest, but ultimately came up short as Ipswich’s strength in depth proved decisive.
A superb header from Leif Davis, following a cross by substitute Kasey McAteer, swung the game in the visitors’ favour and allowed them to see out the win, even after Travis was sent off late on for a second yellow card.
Reflecting on the match, Eustace described it as a thrilling encounter and highlighted the competitiveness shown by his squad.
“I thought it was an excellent game,” he said. “It was two strong teams going toe to toe, and it was really exciting for everyone watching.”
The Derby boss also pointed to the progress his side is making, believing the performance was a clear sign of development.
“I was very proud of the group’s effort. You can see how we’re building and growing as a team,” Eustace explained. “To come up against what is probably the best team in the league, with the strongest squad, and compete with them the way we did was really encouraging.”
Derby had drawn level during the game and Eustace felt his side had the momentum to push on for more before Ipswich turned to their bench.
“We got a deserved equaliser and at that point felt we could maybe go on and win it,” he added. “They then made a number of positive substitutions. When you look at their bench, that’s why they’re top of the table – they’ve got outstanding depth.”
Despite the decisive impact of Ipswich’s changes, Eustace took heart from Derby’s response and resilience until the final whistle.
“It definitely made a difference,” he concluded, “but the way we kept going right to the end was really pleasing.”
