Rangers are reportedly set to postpone contract negotiations with James Tavernier until the end of the Premiership season, allowing the club to focus entirely on their title race against Hearts and Celtic.
Tavernier, a club legend after 11 years of consistently outstanding performances, faces an uncertain future with his current deal set to expire this summer.
Danny Rohl’s side are locked in a three-way battle for the Premiership, and discussions over the 34-year-old captain’s future are now expected to be delayed until the campaign concludes.
Since joining Rangers, Tavernier has scored 143 goals in 555 appearances and has served as captain since 2018. However, in recent months, he has not featured regularly under Rohl.
On the latest edition of Football Insider’s Transfer Insider podcast, it was suggested that his age and squad role could complicate contract talks, which are likely to be revisited at the end of May.
Despite these concerns, Tavernier’s quality remains unquestioned. He recently scored a hat-trick in Rangers’ 8-0 cup victory over Queen’s Park, reaffirming his value to the team. Rohl is believed to view him as an integral part of his plans for the remainder of the season and is keen for him to remain beyond the summer.
Speaking on the podcast, it was explained:
“I’m sure there will be talks between Tavernier and Rangers at some point, likely after the season ends, because the immediate focus is on winning the Scottish Premiership.
He’s been a fantastic servant for Rangers for 11 years — what a signing he has been.
Even if he isn’t a regular starter, he can still play a crucial role as captain or as a reliable backup. It would be unwise to let him leave on a free if a new deal can be agreed.”
Meanwhile, Rangers and Celtic are not only battling for the title but are also rivals in the race to sign Dundee defender Luke Graham. A club-record offer for Graham was rejected on Deadline Day, with QPR and Portsmouth also showing interest.
Football Insider has reported that both Old Firm clubs are monitoring the 30-appearance defender ahead of the summer window.
Whether Graham ends up at Ibrox — and whether he will play alongside club icon Tavernier — remains to be seen.
