Wolves Face Setback as Rob Edwards Criticises Ladislav Krejci After Red Card
Ahead of their clash with Aston Villa F.C., Wolverhampton Wanderers F.C. manager Rob Edwards has called on Ladislav Krejci to improve his discipline following a costly sending-off during Wolves’ narrow 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace F.C..
The Old Gold were holding their own at Selhurst Park on Sunday and looked capable of taking a positive result. However, a lapse in concentration from Krejci left Wolves down to 10 men for the final 30 minutes.
Krejci, already booked for a bodycheck on Ismaila Sarr, received a second yellow for kicking the ball away in frustration. Referee Tom Kirk did not hesitate to send him off, forcing Edwards to rethink his tactics for the remainder of the match.
Edwards slams “frustrated” defender
Edwards stressed that while any red card is frustrating, Krejci’s dismissal was avoidable and ultimately cost Wolves the game. Ten-man Wolves conceded a late Evann Guessand winner, leaving them empty-handed.
“He’s got to learn there. At that moment he’s frustrated but can’t do it. He’d been booked a few moments before, so he knows,” Edwards said in his post-match press conference.
“He’s been brilliant for us overall, but that action cost us.
I can’t defend it. He was really good during the game, but that moment completely changed the momentum. Mistakes happen, but it shouldn’t have. You have to stay cool and not give the referee a decision to make.
“We were right in the game at that point and pushing, and the crowd were on edge. Giving them the advantage with an extra man made it very difficult to continue the way we were playing,” Edwards added.
Wolves face tougher task against Villa
Krejci’s suspension hands a boost to Aston Villa F.C. ahead of Friday night’s local derby at Wolverhampton Wanderers F.C.’ home ground. Villa were already favourites, but Wolves losing one of their key players makes their task even harder.
Since joining Wolves for £26 million in the summer, Krejci has been settling in well under Edwards, showing glimpses of the potential the club invested in. Now, however, his suspension represents a setback for the side.
Without Krejci, Wolves may look to reinstate captain Toti Gomes in the starting lineup. Having recently returned from injury, Gomes could feature if cleared by medical staff.
Otherwise, Edwards may switch to a back four to compensate. Either way, Wolves would be stronger with Krejci available for selection.
