“Incredibly sad”: Ben Knapper’s reaction as Norwich City confirm departure of top prospect

Norwich City F.C. sporting director Ben Knapper has described it as “incredibly sad” to see academy talent Ajay Tavares depart for FC Barcelona, though he admitted the club is immensely proud of the teenager’s achievement.

Norwich have long been known for producing exciting young prospects, even if the pathway from academy to first team has slowed in recent years despite the club retaining Category One status.

Tavares, just 16, had quickly become one of the standout names in the youth ranks. He impressed consistently at academy level and was invited to train with the senior squad, featuring during pre-season preparations.

After delays surrounding the move were resolved, the highly rated youngster has now completed his switch to the Catalan giants. Speaking about the transfer, Knapper acknowledged the disappointment of losing such a gifted player but emphasised the pride felt throughout the club.

He explained that while it is tough to part ways with a talent of Tavares’ calibre, his development reflects the outstanding work carried out by everyone involved in the academy setup.

Knapper added that the player has been a credit to himself and his family and said the club could not be prouder to see him take such a significant step by joining one of the most iconic institutions in world football.

With Tavares gone, the focus at Colney now shifts toward identifying and nurturing the next wave of prospects.

There had been hopes he might eventually break into the first team and potentially generate a major financial return for the club in the future. Instead, he begins a new chapter in Spain, and Norwich will wish him every success.

In recent seasons, players such as Liam Gibbs, Lucien Mahovo and Gabe Forsyth have been around the senior setup, although all three arrived from other clubs for transfer fees rather than progressing entirely through the academy system.

Meanwhile, attention also remains on first-team matters. Head coach Philippe Clement is focused on steering Norwich further clear of the Championship relegation zone.

The Canaries currently sit 18th, six points above the drop, with a late push for the play-off places looking unlikely given the gap to the top six.
