Paul Merson sympathized with Jordan Pickford after Jacob Ramsey’s deflected strike found the net during Everton F.C.’s 3-2 victory over Newcastle United F.C. at St James’ Park.
The England international was beaten on 32 minutes when Ramsey’s shot, taking a fortuitous deflection off Jarrad Branthwaite, leveled the score for Newcastle.
Although Beto restored Everton’s lead shortly after, the deflected goal left Pickford visibly frustrated, as it was impossible to stop.
Merson commented on Sky Sports News: “It takes a deflection and it’s really unlucky for Pickford.

Yet Ramsey’s well-placed strike was the one moment that left Pickford helpless, his feet tangled as the ball ricocheted unpredictably off Branthwaite.
The result denied Pickford a clean sheet, despite Everton’s strong defensive record this season.
The English goalkeeper has kept nine shutouts in the Premier League this campaign and would have hoped for another against his boyhood rivals in Newcastle.
Misfortune struck again when Jacob Murphy’s volley also deflected off Idrissa Gueye, compounding the frustration.
Despite the 3-2 win, it was clear that Pickford was upset to concede twice, highlighting how even excellent defensive efforts can be undone by moments of bad luck.
