Henrik Pedersen makes feelings clear on Sheffield Wednesday fans vs Southampton

Sheffield Wednesday fans created a superb atmosphere at Hillsborough Stadium despite their side falling to a 3–1 defeat against Southampton FC on Saturday afternoon.
The loss means Wednesday supporters have now endured ten calendar months without seeing a home win.

Yet, judging by the noise and passion inside Hillsborough, you would never have guessed it. Spurred on by those in the North Stand’s T1 block, the S6 crowd produced what was arguably their most electric home atmosphere of the season.

When Ryan Manning curled in a free-kick just before half-time to put Southampton 2–0 up, many might have expected fans to drift toward the exits or the concourses, resigned to the prospect of equalling the Championship record of 18 home games without a win in a single season.

While some did step away, a large portion stayed put — and their backing only intensified as the half drew to a close.

That energy carried into the second period and helped inspire Wednesday’s response. Jerry Yates pulled a goal back — his first for the Owls — lifting belief around the ground that an unlikely comeback could be possible. The volume rose again as hope flickered.

However, Southampton re-established their two-goal lead when Taylor Harwood-Bellis capitalised from a corner, exposing a familiar weakness by forcing the ball home.
Even so, the home support refused to be silenced.

Videos circulated widely on social media, and even the travelling Southampton fans acknowledged the remarkable backing from the Wednesday faithful — all the more impressive given the club’s confirmed relegation to League One.

It has been a testing campaign for everyone connected with Wednesday, particularly the supporters who are eager for a reset under new ownership. Yet through the struggles, they have continued to turn out in numbers both home and away.

Head coach Henrik Pedersen has repeatedly thanked the fans this season, and he once again praised them after the match, describing the atmosphere as “amazing” and “very clean.”

Speaking to The Star, Pedersen said the positive energy inside the stadium was powerful and uplifting for the players.

He noted that even during a difficult first half, the supporters remained firmly behind the team, allowing room for mistakes while continuing to sing and push the players forward. He described the backing as heartfelt and full of energy, adding that the overall feeling inside the stadium was truly special.
