Newcastle United were reduced to ten men in their clash with Manchester United at St James’ Park after referee Peter Bankes dismissed Jacob Ramsey for a second bookable offence.
Ramsey was shown his marching orders in the first minute of stoppage time following a controversial incident involving visiting goalkeeper Senne Lammens.
The midfielder had nudged the ball past the onrushing keeper before losing control and tumbling to the turf, prompting Bankes to brand the fall as simulation and issue a second yellow card.
Watching the replays on TNT Sports, pundit Ally McCoist admitted the decision was far from straightforward.
He questioned whether Ramsey had genuinely attempted to deceive the referee, suggesting instead that the player may simply have been off-balance after contact, however minimal.
The decision sparked fury inside the stadium. Bankes was loudly jeered as he left the pitch at half-time and again upon his return for the second period, with sections of the home support chanting their disapproval throughout the remainder of the match.
Former Newcastle goalkeeper Shay Given also felt the punishment was excessive.
Speaking in the studio, he argued there appeared to be slight contact and described the second yellow card as extremely harsh, even if the incident did not necessarily warrant a penalty. Given also criticised Ramsey’s first booking in the 26th minute for pulling back Casemiro, calling it an unnecessary foul in a non-threatening area.
Fellow analyst Owen Hargreaves suggested the hesitation before Ramsey went to ground may have influenced the referee’s call, as it could have been interpreted as an attempt to win a foul. Even so, he echoed the view that the dismissal felt severe, particularly given the goalkeeper’s aggressive rush from his line.
The red card capped a dramatic end to the half. Shortly afterwards, Anthony Gordon fired Newcastle ahead from the penalty spot after being fouled by Bruno Fernandes. However, Fernandes quickly made amends by setting up Casemiro to equalise deep into stoppage time, ensuring the sides went in level after a breathless opening 45 minutes.
