Sunderland defender Nectar Triantis will not be making a return to Hibernian, even though the Scottish Premiership side were reportedly prepared to break their transfer record to sign him permanently.
According to The Daily Record, the deal has officially collapsed, with Hibs conceding defeat in their attempts to bring the 22-year-old back to Easter Road. Triantis impressed during his loan spell in Edinburgh last season, emerging as one of the club’s top performers.
Talks had begun over a permanent move, but Sunderland have informed Hibernian that Triantis won’t be heading back to Scotland. The Black Cats, led by sporting director Kristjaan Speakman, are still evaluating the Australian’s future ahead of the upcoming Premier League season. If he does depart this summer, it’s expected he’ll head to the English Championship, a top-tier European league, or Major League Soccer — not back to the SPFL.
Triantis is currently sidelined with a minor injury, which kept him out of recent pre-season games against Hearts and Hull City. Despite this, he remains highly regarded and could either leave on loan or in a permanent deal, depending on interest and Sunderland’s squad requirements. Manager Régis Le Bris is still finalising his defensive setup, and no firm decision has been made yet.
Internationally, Triantis is also at a crossroads. Eligible to represent both Australia and Greece, he has played for the Olyroos at youth level but has yet to be capped at senior level. His next club decision is expected to be influenced by the prospect of regular first-team football.
For now, what’s certain is that Easter Road won’t be his next destination.
