Sunderland could sign dream partner for Xhaka in “incredible” £26m star

Sunderland Fans Buzzing as Xhaka Signing Signals Ambition Ahead of Premier League Return

Sunderland supporters have plenty to look forward to as the Black Cats gear up for their Premier League return. Rather than merely aiming to survive, the club appears determined to make an immediate impact.

Their bold intent is clear with the signing of Swiss midfielder Granit Xhaka for £17 million—a deal that could prove to be a bargain. The 32-year-old returns to the Premier League, where he earned a reputation as a tough, combative presence during his time with Arsenal.

Why Xhaka Could Be a Game-Changer for Sunderland

Xhaka arrives with a wealth of top-level experience. After a successful two-season spell at Bayer Leverkusen—where he made 99 appearances, scored six goals, and provided nine assists—he returns to England ready to lead from the middle of the park.

Beyond his stats, it’s Xhaka’s relentless playing style that likely appealed to Sunderland. He averaged 5.4 ball recoveries per game in the Bundesliga last season, showcasing his tireless defensive work rate.

At Arsenal, his record was equally impressive. Across 225 Premier League appearances, Xhaka won over 1,000 duels, scored 17 goals, and registered 24 assists. Now wearing the number 34 shirt for Sunderland, he brings a proven blend of grit and technical ability—qualities that manager Regis Le Bris will count on in the battle to avoid relegation.

Potential Midfield Duo: Xhaka and Gabriel Sara

Xhaka could soon be joined by another dynamic midfield force: Gabriel Sara. The Brazilian playmaker is reportedly being lined up for a £26 million move back to England, and his arrival would further strengthen Le Bris’ midfield options.

Sara, who previously starred for Norwich City in the Championship, demonstrated both creativity and combativeness. He won an average of 4.8 duels per game during the 2023/24 season, contributing a remarkable 25 goal involvements in 46 matches. Football scout Antonio Mango even called him “incredible” for his performances.

Now at Galatasaray, Sara has continued to impress with two goals and ten assists in 45 appearances. Journalist Conor Southwell recently described him as “exceptional,” underlining his readiness to make an impact in the Premier League.

In Le Bris’ preferred 4-2-3-1 formation, Sara could play as an attacking midfielder just ahead of Xhaka—who, with his deep-lying distribution, would be well-positioned to supply the Brazilian with opportunities in the final third.

Balancing Xhaka’s Fire

While Xhaka’s aggression is part of his appeal, Sunderland will need to manage his temperament. During his time at Arsenal, he received four red cards. Still, that combative edge may prove useful in a relegation battle—especially if paired with similarly tenacious players like Sara.

Together, Xhaka and Sara have the experience, quality, and mentality to anchor Sunderland’s midfield as the club returns to the top flight. If both deals are finalized, the Black Cats may be well-equipped to not just survive—but thrive—in the Premier League.
