Shearer Rips “Overrated” £70m Star: “Nowhere Near Good Enough”

Alan Shearer has delivered a fierce criticism of Nick Woltemade after the striker’s disappointing performance against Manchester City, describing the forward’s recent displays as “nowhere near good enough.”

The former Newcastle United captain warned that the club’s near £70 million summer investment could become a serious problem for manager Eddie Howe.

The criticism followed Newcastle’s 2–1 defeat to Manchester City in late February 2026, where Woltemade struggled badly.

The striker failed to register a single shot and did not manage a touch inside the opposition penalty area throughout the match.

Shearer was especially frustrated by the player’s lack of aggression, pointing out that he was easily brushed aside while pressing, which ultimately contributed to a City goal.

Speaking on Premier League Productions, Shearer questioned the value of the huge transfer fee, saying it was shocking to see so little influence from a player who cost close to £70 million.

According to the former England striker, Woltemade looked completely out of his depth, adding that a forward who cannot get involved in the box or hold his ground physically should not be starting games.

He suggested the striker may need to drop to the reserves to rediscover his hunger and intensity.

Although Howe has continued to defend his summer signing in public, Shearer believes Newcastle cannot carry underperforming players if they hope to remain competitive in the race for European football.

In his view, Woltemade’s poor form has become one of the biggest obstacles affecting Newcastle’s campaign this season.
