EXCLUSIVE BREAKING NEWS REGARDING SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY: Middlesbrough land ex-Sheffield Wednesday and Barnsley goalkeeper Joe Wildsmith on loan from West Brom…..

Middlesbrough F.C. have strengthened their goalkeeping options after completing the loan signing of goalkeeper Joe Wildsmith from West Bromwich Albion F.C. until the end of the season.

Wildsmith, who came through the academy at Sheffield Wednesday F.C., was once regarded as one of the club’s most promising young talents.

The goalkeeper also represented England at youth level and went on to make 89 senior appearances for his boyhood side, though he was never able to fully cement himself as the club’s undisputed number one.

Following his departure from Wednesday in 2022, the shot-stopper enjoyed a productive two-year spell with Derby County F.C., where he featured regularly.

His performances eventually earned him a move to West Brom in 2024, although his opportunities at The Hawthorns have been limited, with just 20 appearances for the club so far. Wildsmith had also previously spent time on loan with Barnsley F.C. earlier in his career.

Confirming the deal, Middlesbrough released a statement saying the 30-year-old will add valuable depth to their goalkeeping department. Over the course of his career, Wildsmith has accumulated more than 200 senior appearances, with the majority coming during his time at Sheffield Wednesday and Derby County.

During his spell at West Brom, Wildsmith enjoyed a short run in the first team last December when he stepped in for goalkeeper Josh Griffiths.

Competition at Middlesbrough
At the Riverside Stadium, Wildsmith is expected to compete with Sol Brynn for the starting role. His arrival also comes amid uncertainty surrounding the future of Middlesbrough’s current first-choice goalkeeper Seny Dieng.

Reports from BBC Sport Teesside suggest a potential move for Dieng to Feyenoord has recently collapsed, though the Senegal international could still depart before the transfer window closes. Earlier in the window, Dieng was also linked with a move to Hull City A.F.C., but that transfer ultimately failed to materialize.

With the transfer deadline approaching, speculation continues over Dieng’s future, while Middlesbrough now have an experienced option in Wildsmith ready to step in if needed.
