Rangers and Celtic learn likely outcome from shameful Ibrox scenes – ‘I’ve been told…’

Tensions between Rangers and Celtic supporters could have serious consequences after chaotic scenes followed their latest derby clash.

The two fierce rivals met again at Ibrox for the second time in just a couple of weeks. After a tense encounter finished goalless in normal time, the match was decided by penalties, with Celtic eventually emerging victorious following misses from James Tavernier and Djeidi Gassama.

However, the match was overshadowed by troubling scenes at full time. As soon as Tomáš Čvančara converted the decisive spot-kick, fans from both sides stormed onto the pitch, creating a dangerous and chaotic situation that left many observers concerned about safety at future derbies.

Flares were thrown amid the disorder, while police and stadium stewards struggled to control the large number of supporters entering the field.

A barrier had to be formed to keep rival fans apart before they were eventually ushered back into the stands.

Possibility of behind-closed-doors Old Firm clash.

According to Paul Slane on the Keeping The Ball On The Ground podcast, there is now talk that the next Old Firm encounter could be played without any fans present.
He revealed that discussions have taken place about staging the match behind closed doors, potentially banning supporters from both clubs.

There have also been reports suggesting that authorities could consider points deductions for both teams as investigations into the pitch invasion continue.

Clubs may struggle to argue against punishments

Despite the electric atmosphere created by the large travelling support at Ibrox, the match will likely be remembered for the wrong reasons.

Former Rangers midfielder Graeme Souness has already suggested that away supporters could be permanently banned from future Old Firm fixtures, a move that now seems increasingly possible.

If sanctions are imposed, both clubs may find it difficult to challenge them given the severity of the incidents.
