Sammie Szmodics Responds After Ipswich Town Exit
Sammie Szmodics has spoken out following comments from Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna regarding his January loan move to Derby County. McKenna had explained the decision wasn’t based on footballing reasons, saying:
“In the end, it wasn’t a football decision, it wasn’t related to his football performance. It was made in the best interests of our group dynamic, our dressing room culture, and the values of our team.”
Szmodics, who scored the only goal as Derby County defeated Portsmouth on Tuesday—his second in seven league appearances for the Rams—addressed the situation in an interview with BBC Radio Derbyshire.
He said:
“Listen – there are things said in football, opinions and different sides you don’t always hear. I just focus on playing football. As soon as I knew Derby and John Eustace were interested, it was an opportunity I couldn’t turn down. I’m focused on getting match fit, enjoying scoring goals, and hopefully helping Derby back into the play-offs.”
What About Szmodics’ Future at Ipswich Town?
Szmodics has proven himself in the Championship, having scored 27 goals in a season for Blackburn Rovers, which earned him the Golden Boot and a £9million move to Ipswich Town. However, his time at Portman Road has been less fruitful, with limited starts and now a loan spell at Derby.
It appears Szmodics has had some sort of falling out at Ipswich, and unless he makes a major impact at Derby, the club may struggle to recoup the £9million they invested in him.
At 30 years old, a strong finish to the season for the Rams could be crucial for his future, but otherwise, Ipswich may have to accept a reduced fee if he is sold this summer.
For now, Szmodics’ focus is simple: score more goals for Derby County, while Ipswich Town concentrate on their promotion push. Come summer, McKenna and the club will decide whether Szmodics has a future back at Portman Road.
