The result means the third-placed Blues remain ahead of the South London side on goal difference, albeit with a game in hand. Meanwhile, Town sit two points behind Middlesbrough in second after Boro were held to a goalless draw at Blackburn.
Reflecting on the match, Neil conceded his team were second best in the opening half.
“I thought Ipswich were excellent before the break,” he said. “They moved the ball really well and we never really got going. We looked a bit panicked and didn’t use the ball effectively.
“We tried to press as we normally do, but credit to them—they rotated well and kept finding space in midfield.
“They did score, and aside from one good save from Patterson, there weren’t loads of chances, but it always felt more likely they’d get the next goal rather than us.
“We had a couple of moments—Neghli had a run and shot, and we had another effort from the right—but overall I wasn’t happy at half-time. They were better, and we needed to change something.”
Neil explained that conceding the goal ultimately pushed him into a more aggressive tactical approach.
“That goal was the trigger. At 0–0, I might have approached things differently, but once we went behind, we had to react.
“We went very aggressive, matched them man-for-man across the pitch. At that point, it can go either way—you either grab the next goal and get back into it, or things can unravel and it becomes a long afternoon.
“Thankfully, the players fully committed. They pressed hard, competed well, and although Ipswich still looked dangerous, we carried more threat than we did in the first half.”
He also clarified that the tactical shift—not just personnel changes—was key to the turnaround.
“We took Langstaff off and brought Ivanovic on, but the real difference was how we pressed. The system change mattered more than the substitution itself.
“If you’re going to play with two up front and go more direct, you need that physical presence, which is why we made that call.”
After levelling, Millwall nearly snatched all three points, with Ivanovic striking the bar late on.
“Once we got the equaliser, we had chances to win it and were a bit unlucky not to. But honestly, at half-time, I’d have taken a point.”
Neil also praised Ipswich’s quality, particularly at home.
“They’re the best home side in the league. Their squad is incredibly strong, and they can bring real quality off the bench.
“But in the second half, I thought we matched them, which is why we were able to get something from the game.
“It’s not an easy place to come, so this is definitely a result we can be pleased with.”
