Ipswich Town have been dealt a major setback ahead of their Championship season opener against Birmingham City on Friday night, with experienced defender Conor Townsend ruled out due to a serious injury.
The 32-year-old left-back suffered a devastating anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury during a pre-season friendly against French side Auxerre.
Townsend went down in clear discomfort during the first half and had to be substituted. The club has since confirmed that the injury is severe enough to likely sideline him for the entire 2025/26 season — a significant blow to both the player and the squad.
Valuable Veteran Ruled Out
While Townsend wasn’t expected to start — with Leif Davis the preferred choice at left-back — his absence will still be felt.
A reliable and experienced squad member, Townsend brings leadership and composure from his time at West Bromwich Albion, where he made 195 appearances between 2018 and 2024. He joined Ipswich last season following a stint in the Premier League.
Despite his age and declining pace, Townsend remains a dependable option off the bench, known for his accurate deliveries and understanding of the Championship’s physical demands. His loss weakens Ipswich’s depth, particularly in high-pressure moments.
Speaking to TWTD, manager Kieran McKenna said:
“It was a real shame last weekend. Conor has suffered an ACL injury. He’s seeing a surgeon this week and we’ll look to get him into surgery as soon as possible. It’s a huge blow — both for Conor as a professional and for us as a team, given what we expected him to contribute this season.”
More Injury Concerns for Ipswich
Townsend may not be the only absentee for Friday’s match. First-choice left-back Leif Davis and winger Jaden Philogene are also in doubt due to minor knocks picked up during pre-season.
McKenna provided an update:
“Jaden and Leif are both struggling at the moment. We’ll give them until the last minute to prove their fitness, because they’re important players and both had strong pre-seasons. But right now, they’re unlikely to feature against Birmingham.”
Should Davis be ruled out, McKenna could turn to Ben Johnson or Ashley Young as makeshift left-backs. Although naturally right-sided defenders, both have experience playing on the opposite flank and could step in if needed.
Birmingham May Look to Exploit Ipswich’s Left Side
With Ipswich potentially fielding a patchwork defense, Birmingham City could target that vulnerability. New signing Demarai Gray will be eager to make a big impression on his return to St Andrew’s, while the likes of Kyogo Furuhashi, Tommy Doyle, Keshi Anderson, and Kanya Fujimoto are all pushing for starting roles in the attacking midfield positions.
