The right-back has managed just 239 minutes of Premier League action this campaign, despite Everton’s ongoing struggles in his position. A hernia sidelined him between October and November, but he returned to feature during the busy festive period when the squad was stretched.
During that spell, Patterson delivered solid performances in away victories over Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa, while also making appearances against Leeds United and Sunderland.
Despite those displays, he has since found himself back on the bench, with manager David Moyes opting to use centre-back Jake O’Brien and midfielder James Garner in the right-back role ahead of him.
Patterson recently featured in both of Scotland’s friendlies and, despite limited club minutes, remains confident of making the national team’s World Cup squad.
Speaking about his situation, he explained that Scotland manager Steve Clarke has encouraged him to play as often as possible, but he remains focused on controlling what he can — training well and making the most of any chances he gets. Patterson believes he has done that this season and is now hoping to translate that into more opportunities at club level.
He also expressed his satisfaction at returning to action, noting that getting minutes on the pitch has helped him feel sharp again.
The defender came off the bench for 28 minutes in Scotland’s 1-0 defeat to Ivory Coast at Hill Dickinson Stadium. Reflecting on the experience, Patterson said it was special to play in front of familiar supporters, adding that the atmosphere gave him a sense of being at home.
He also mentioned that his international teammates were impressed by the facilities, something he is used to at club level every week.
Overall, Patterson described the experience as positive, highlighting his joy at earning two more caps to reach 25 for his country. While he wants to play as much as possible, he was pleased with his contribution when called upon.
