According to Sky Deutschland, via Fussball Transfers, Schalke 04 are facing strong competition in their pursuit of the Japanese international. Speculation has been growing about Tanaka’s future at Leeds, with the 27-year-old seeking more consistent playing time.
Despite playing a key role in Leeds’ promotion last season, Tanaka has struggled for regular minutes in the Premier League this term. He has made 21 appearances but accumulated just 765 minutes, starting only seven matches. His brief 22-minute cameo in the goalless draw against Brentford before the international break marked his first involvement off the bench in six games.
Clubs including SC Freiburg, Hannover 96, and Union Berlin have already made enquiries, while unnamed English sides are also monitoring his situation. However, Tanaka is currently inclined to stay in the Premier League, even amid frustration over his limited role at Elland Road.
Leeds United are open to selling the midfielder but are holding out for a fee in the region of €10–12 million. Schalke remain interested, particularly if they secure promotion to the Bundesliga, though both the asking price and Tanaka’s preference to stay in England could complicate any potential move.
While interest from Germany persists, Tanaka’s priority—for now—is to continue his career in England should he depart Leeds United this summer.
