Nottingham Forest Boss Nuno Espirito Santo’s Future in Doubt Amid Rift with Edu
Nuno Espirito Santo is expected to remain as Nottingham Forest head coach for now, despite growing uncertainty over his long-term future at the club.
Reports of tension behind the scenes surfaced last week, pointing to a rift between Nuno and the club’s global head of football, Edu. While club owner Evangelos Marinakis has yet to take action, it’s understood he has been tasked with addressing the dispute.
Speculation over Nuno’s potential sacking began circulating early Friday. In a striking press conference later that day, Nuno acknowledged the rumours and admitted that his relationship with Marinakis had deteriorated—though his main frustration reportedly lies with Edu.
Several high-profile managers, including Ange Postecoglou, Brendan Rodgers, and Jose Mourinho, have been linked as possible replacements. However, Sky Sports reports there is currently “no imminent sign” that Marinakis intends to dismiss Nuno.
In what appeared to be an effort to ease tensions, Nuno publicly called for clear-the-air discussions with both Marinakis and Edu. Despite this, no meeting has yet been scheduled.
With Forest not in action this week, Marinakis has a bit more time to evaluate the situation. The upcoming international break in September is seen as a potentially decisive period for Nuno’s future.
Following Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace, Nuno reaffirmed his desire to stay in the role and labelled suggestions that he is trying to force his own exit as “absurd.” Still, he admitted there are no guarantees he’ll remain in charge beyond the end of the transfer window next Monday.
“I cannot answer that question,” Nuno said when asked about his short-term future. “But what I know is that I am working and trying to do my job the best I can.
“Of course the situation has to be resolved. We are all responsible people, and we need to have an honest conversation to build something positive—because the most important thing is the team.”
He continued: “It’s not just about the three of us. The entire club needs to come together. First, we must complete the squad before the transfer window closes—this is crucial.
“These discussions must happen. The players need them, the squad needs them, the club needs them, and we need them. And we will have them.”
