Kieran McKenna Reflects on Key Departures Following Ipswich’s Relegation

McKenna on Conor Chaplin’s Departure

“Conor is one of the best people I’ve ever had the pleasure of coaching and knowing. He’s been a brilliant player—and still is—and someone I hold in the highest regard.

We’ve spoken throughout the summer. Conor is someone you can have honest, man-to-man conversations with. There’s a deep mutual respect.

We discussed what would be best for his future, which wasn’t necessarily aligned with what we needed from him this season.

It was a tough decision because he’s a fantastic character who would’ve continued to contribute greatly. But it was important to respect his desire to take the next step in his career.”

McKenna on Luke Woolfenden’s Exit

Luke Woolfenden also left the club this summer, signing for Coventry City. McKenna acknowledged the emotional nature of the move and provided clarity on the situation:

“Everyone knows what an important figure Luke has been for this club. Over the off-season, he made it clear he was ready for a new challenge.

Of course, you don’t want to lose players like him. He’s been a huge part of our progress and would have made us stronger this year.

But at the same time, you have to respect a player’s wishes. If someone feels it’s time to move on—and a deal can be reached—you don’t want to stand in their way.

As I’ve said from the beginning, we need a group of players who are 100% committed to being here. No one should feel stuck at the club for the wrong reasons.”
