Birmingham City Set for Championship Opener Under Friday Night Lights Against Ipswich.

Birmingham City fans can now mark their calendars after the EFL confirmed the full fixture list for the upcoming Championship season, released at 12 PM on June 26.

Following a record-breaking League One title win, where Chris Davies’ side amassed an impressive 111 points and 34 victories, excitement is building ahead of their return to the second tier.

Transfer activity around St Andrew’s continues to dominate headlines, with FLW reporting an exclusive that Wolves midfielder Tommy Doyle is close to joining on loan, including an option to buy.

With Knighthead Capital Management reportedly set to back Davies heavily in the market, Birmingham aim to compete with recently relegated sides like Leicester City, Ipswich Town, and Southampton—both on and off the pitch.

And that challenge begins immediately.

The Blues will host Ipswich Town on Friday, August 8, in the first game of the Championship season—selected by Sky Sports as the league’s curtain-raiser, with kick-off set for 8 PM.

The fixture announcement was confirmed via the club’s official Instagram, where club owner Tom Wagner expressed his excitement with the comment: “Friday night lights. LFG.” The club added, “That atmosphere for the first game though. Jheeeeeeez.”

Wagner, who has built a strong rapport with the Birmingham fanbase, was notably present at the final home game of last season and delivered a passionate post-match speech.

This high-profile clash against last season’s Premier League surprise package Ipswich Town will provide an early test for Birmingham, who impressed against Fulham and Newcastle United in the domestic cups last year.

Interestingly, the fixture mirrors history. Back in the 1994/95 season, Birmingham also began their second-tier campaign with a home tie against a relegated Ipswich side, winning 3-1 in front of nearly 19,000 fans. The goals that day came from Paul Tait, Ricky Otto, and Paul Bowen.

Most recently, the sides met at St Andrew’s in November 2023, playing out a 2-2 draw as Ipswich pushed toward Premier League promotion.

Historically, Ipswich edge the head-to-head with 36 wins to Birmingham’s 30, with 19 draws between the clubs (stats via 11v11).

With Ipswich still among the promotion favourites—despite selling Liam Delap to Chelsea for £30 million—a sell-out crowd is expected in B9. A strong showin Davies’ side could be the perfect statement to launch their Championship return.
