James Collins’ Wolves under-21 side will be aiming to return to the knockout stages of the Vertu Motors Trophy this season after falling short in last year’s campaign.
Wolves are one of 16 invited academy teams joining the 48 League One and League Two clubs competing in the EFL tournament.
During Thursday’s draw, Wolves were represented as ball number eight in the Northern section and were placed into Group A. They’ll face Salford City, Stockport County, and Wigan Athletic — with all three matches being played away from home.
Each team in the group plays one another once, and only the top two will advance to the second round.
Wolves will be looking to improve on last season’s disappointing run, where they finished bottom of their group. Their 2024/25 campaign began with a draw against Port Vale, though they lost the extra point in a penalty shootout. That was followed by defeats to Wrexham and Salford — the latter of whom they’ll face again this year.
Wolves have historically enjoyed success in the competition’s early rounds but will need to rediscover that form to progress this time around. Fixture dates for the 2025/26 Vertu Trophy will be announced in due course.
