Ipswich Town may boast the Championship’s 2023/24 top scorer in Sammie Szmodics, but with Liam Delap’s departure, adding another striker will be high on their summer to-do list.
Back in May, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano revealed the Tractor Boys were eyeing a move for Manchester City striker Divin Mubama. However, Stoke City have now emerged as serious contenders for his signature, with journalist Fraser Fletcher reporting that a loan move to the bet365 Stadium is a “real possibility.”
Mark Robins’ side is in dire need of attacking reinforcements after a dismal season that saw them average under a goal per game in the Championship. Mubama’s impressive youth-level scoring stats make him an attractive option.

The 20-year-old clearly has the pedigree to step into senior football, and Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna would be wise not to let a player of his potential slip away.
Proven at youth level, poised for a senior breakout
Mubama already has Premier League experience from his time at West Ham, featuring in eight senior matches. He also played one match for Manchester City’s first team last season—ironically against Ipswich—and impressed in their 8-0 FA Cup win over Salford, where he scored.
His European exploits also show promise. During West Ham’s 2022/23 UEFA Conference League-winning run, Mubama scored and assisted in just two appearances.
In the Premier League 2 last season, he was prolific—scoring 16 goals in 13 games to help Manchester City win the competition. It’s clear he’s outgrown youth football, and a Championship move looks like the logical next step.
Why Ipswich are a better fit than Stoke
Stoke’s attacking output last season was poor—only three players managed more than three goals across the entire campaign. Mubama would be a welcome addition, but Ipswich arguably offer a far more suitable environment for his development.
At Portman Road, he’d join an attack already featuring proven Championship performers like Szmodics, Jack Clarke, and Jaden Philogene. Add to that the attacking core from the 2023/24 promotion season, when Ipswich scored a league-high 92 goals, and it’s clear Mubama wouldn’t need to carry the entire goalscoring burden himself.
This reduced pressure, paired with high-quality teammates, could help him find his feet quickly and elevate his game even further.
That said, reports now suggest Stoke may be leading the race for Mubama’s services, while Ipswich have also been linked with alternatives like Patrick Agyemang.
If the young striker ends up at a Championship rival, Town will be hoping he doesn’t come back to haunt them.
