Atletico Madrid have officially confirmed the departure of left-back Reinildo Mandava, with Sunderland now emerging as the frontrunner to sign the 31-year-old on a free transfer.
The Mozambique international, who previously won Ligue 1 with Lille before spending two seasons at Atletico Madrid, is expected to sign a two-year contract with the newly-promoted Premier League side.
In a farewell post shared via Atletico’s English-language social media account on Monday morning, the Spanish club paid tribute to Reinildo, writing:
“An example of dedication, courage and heart, of overcoming… Thank you so much for these years defending our colors, Rei! We wish you all the best in your future endeavors.”
Sunderland Move Confirmed by Transfer Expert
Fabrizio Romano confirmed the news on Sunday, stating: “Reinildo to Sunderland, here we go! Two year deal done for the left back set to join from Atlético Madrid.”
Reinildo made 74 appearances for Atletico after joining from Lille in 2022 and also featured in the Club World Cup earlier this year. However, he struggled for regular minutes in the latter stages of his time in Madrid and has chosen to continue his career on Wearside, despite reported interest from Crystal Palace and Leeds United.

Reinildo’s impending arrival is part of a major summer rebuild by Sunderland, who are looking to bolster their squad with experienced top-flight talent ahead of their Premier League return. The left-back’s experience will complement a youthful squad under construction.
The club is also on the verge of finalizing a club-record deal for Strasbourg midfielder Habib Diarra, with the transfer potentially reaching £30 million. However, they may face stiff competition for goalkeeper Marcin Bulka, as Saudi Pro League side Neom have entered the race late for the OGC Nice stopper.
The signings of Reinildo and Diarra reflect Sunderland’s renewed ambition under their new leadership structure, with director of football Florent Ghisolfi expected to arrive soon to spearhead the next phase of their project.
