Sunderland’s new signing Habib Diarra has promised to give “everything” for the club after finalising his move from French side RC Strasbourg.
The 21-year-old midfielder has penned a five-year deal with the Black Cats, with the transfer reportedly costing around £30 million. Diarra becomes the club’s second addition of their new Premier League chapter, following Enzo Le Fée’s permanent switch from Roma after a successful loan spell.
“I’m happy and excited to become a Black Cat,” Diarra said. “I can’t wait to experience the Stadium of Light and meet the fans. Everyone saw the success last season, and I promise to give everything for this team and fight for these colours in the Premier League. I’m ready for the challenge and eager to get started.”
Diarra played a key role in helping Strasbourg secure European football last season and arrives in England with over 100 senior appearances to his name. Sunderland sporting director Kristjaan Speakman believes the Senegal international is a major statement of intent from the club.
“Habib is a hugely exciting talent, and we’re thrilled to bring him to Sunderland,” Speakman said. “At just 21, he has already captained a team in one of Europe’s top leagues, which highlights his leadership and maturity. His signing reflects how far we’ve come and the ambition we have as a club.
“Like Sunderland, Habib is ready for the Premier League, and we’re excited to begin this new chapter together.”
Diarra, who previously represented France at youth level, chose to play internationally for Senegal and has already earned 11 caps. He scored his first international goal in a 3-1 friendly win over England in June.
His arrival helps offset the departure of young star Jobe Bellingham, who left Sunderland for Borussia Dortmund earlier this summer.
