Conor Coady has remembered Diogo Jota as one of the finest players he ever shared the pitch with, following the heartbreaking news of his former teammate’s death.
Jota, 28, tragically passed away alongside his brother, André Silva, in a car accident in Zamora, Spain. The Portuguese forward, who recently celebrated his marriage to longtime partner Rute Cardoso, leaves behind three children.
Coady, who started his career at Liverpool and most recently played for Everton, spent several successful years alongside Jota at Wolves. Together, they played key roles in the club’s 2017/18 Championship title-winning campaign, before securing a top-seven finish in the Premier League the following season.
Taking to Instagram to honour his late friend, the 32-year-old wrote:
“One of the best players I’ve ever had the privilege of sharing a pitch with. He became our brother in a special team and was a shining light within it… you will be missed my mate by everyone.”
Tributes have poured in from across the football world, with Everton among the many clubs expressing their sorrow. The Merseyside club wrote:
“Everyone at Everton is deeply saddened by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva. Our thoughts are with their family and friends at this sad time.”
Jota’s recent achievements included helping Portugal win the UEFA Nations League this summer — a testament to the immense talent and impact he had both on and off the field.
