Although the club announced that Florent Ghisolfi would officially begin work on Thursday, 3 July, it’s already clear his presence is being felt across Sunderland AFC.

Over recent years, we’ve built a solid foundation, and now we’re bringing in elite individuals who can truly elevate the project.

As impressive as Kristjaan Speakman is, he can’t do everything—and the European market hasn’t always been his strong suit. Bringing in someone of Ghisolfi’s calibre, with experience at top clubs, could prove to be one of the most crucial decisions Sunderland make this summer.

While I don’t know Ghisolfi personally, it’s hard to imagine him leaving a club like Roma without being genuinely inspired by the vision laid out by Kyril Louis-Dreyfus, Juan Sartori, and Speakman. That speaks volumes about the ambition behind the scenes and should excite every Sunderland fan. We’ve become an attractive destination for top-tier talent.

I’ve got to admit, I’m genuinely buzzing about Florent Ghisolfi’s arrival as Director of Football.

I didn’t know much about him at first, but from what I’ve seen and read, he seems like a perfect fit for Sunderland.

In the short term, it already looks like he’s working on bringing in Premier League-quality players. Whether the likes of Noah Sidiki and Habib Diarra are purely his signings or part of a wider plan doesn’t matter too much—what matters is they look like the real deal.

Long-term, I expect him to build on the great work already happening in our academy. He clearly values youth development, and that bodes well for seeing more local talent come through the ranks.
