David Button Joins Ipswich Town on Free Transfer

Ipswich Town have confirmed the signing of experienced goalkeeper David Button on a free transfer following his departure from Reading. The 36-year-old, who is best known for his stints at Brentford and Fulham, made 11 appearances in League One last season and arrives at Portman Road on a Bosman deal.

In addition to providing depth between the sticks, Button will also play a key role in mentoring the club’s younger goalkeepers. This comes after the recent departure of assistant goalkeeper coach David Martin.

With Button’s arrival, Ipswich now have five senior goalkeepers on their books: Alex Palmer, Christian Walton, Aro Muric, Cieran Slicker, and Button himself. It’s expected that Scotland U21 international Slicker, 22, will be loaned out this season, while Muric could leave the club following a difficult first year in Suffolk.

Button expressed his excitement about the move:

> “I’m delighted to join the club. I’ve followed Ipswich’s journey over the past few years, and it’s exciting to now be a part of it. I’ve played with Palms [Alex Palmer] and Christian [Walton] before, and I’m looking forward to getting started and meeting the rest of the squad. This move also brings new elements to my role, and I’m eager to learn and contribute in any way I can.”

Town’s Head of Goalkeeping, Rene Gilmartin, praised the signing:

> “David brings a wealth of experience from the Premier League and Championship. His professionalism and character will be a huge asset to our group. He’ll not only strengthen our goalkeeping options but also provide invaluable guidance to the coaching staff and younger players.”
