Sunderland Make key backroom addition Ahead of Premier League Return

Sunderland are leaving no stone unturned as they prepare for life back in the Premier League. Recognising the need for improvement across all departments, the Black Cats have added another key figure to their backroom staff—a former AC Milan and Al Nassr coach.

The club has already confirmed the arrival of 21-year-old midfielder Habib Diarra from RC Strasbourg and is closing in on deals for Noah Sadiki (20) from Union Saint-Gilloise and Djordje Petrovic (25) from Chelsea. But while new player signings are crucial, strengthening behind the scenes is just as important.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Sunderland have now secured the services of Luciano Vulcano as their new assistant coach. Vulcano brings valuable experience from his time at AC Milan and Al Nassr, where he worked alongside some of the game’s top talent—including Cristiano Ronaldo.

Romano revealed that Sunderland head coach Regis Le Bris had been keen to bring Vulcano on board for over a year, and the club’s board has finally delivered. Interestingly, Vulcano had offers to take up head coach roles elsewhere but opted instead to join Sunderland in what will be his first experience in English football.

This appointment follows another important off-field move, with Sunderland recently announcing Florent Ghisolfi as the club’s new Director of Football. In an official statement, the club said:

With these strategic signings both on and off the pitch, Sunderland are clearly intent on hitting the ground running in the 2025/26 Premier League season. The changes being made this summer are giving fans real reason to believe the club is serious about competing at the top level.
