Newcastle United have been linked with Dominic Calvert-Lewin more times than we can count since Eddie Howe took charge at St James’ Park.
Reports often claimed Howe viewed the Everton striker as the solution to his side’s attacking issues—both before the arrival of Alexander Isak and during Callum Wilson’s injury spells, which frequently left Newcastle short up front.
However, the prospect of signing Calvert-Lewin was never a popular one among fans. Many, ourselves included, saw him as a downgrade on Callum Wilson. While both have had persistent injury issues, Wilson has consistently been the more reliable goal scorer—last season aside.
Now, with Calvert-Lewin departing Everton after nine years, a new twist has emerged. According to Newcastle World, newly-promoted Sunderland are exploring a move for the out-of-contract forward.
As much as we’ve opposed the idea of DCL coming to Newcastle, we have to admit: he’d actually be a smart signing for Sunderland.
A Win-Win-Win Situation
His Premier League pedigree would bring much-needed experience to Regis Le Bris’ side, which currently lacks top-flight know-how. Whether he can stay fit and rediscover his scoring touch is another matter—and Sunderland’s problem to solve—but having him in the squad would still be a clear upgrade.
Would his arrival be enough to keep them in the Premier League? Almost certainly not. But for Sunderland, Newcastle, and Calvert-Lewin himself, this could be a win-win-win scenario.
