Michael Keane has signed a one-year contract extension with Everton, just days after his previous deal expired. The 32-year-old defender becomes the third member of the Blues’ backline to commit to the club this summer, following new agreements for Jarrad Branthwaite and club captain Seamus Coleman.
Keane, once Everton’s record signing, will provide experienced cover in defence, expected to be fourth-choice behind the starting pair of Branthwaite and James Tarkowski, along with summer signing Jake O’Brien.
Everton manager David Moyes highlighted Keane’s late-season performances as key to the club’s decision.
“We’re pleased Michael has decided to stay,” Moyes said. “His displays against Fulham and Newcastle at the end of last season showed how valuable he can be. We’ll need his experience and professionalism as we move forward.”
Despite interest from other clubs, Keane opted to remain at Goodison Park, confident he can still contribute meaningfully under Moyes.
“I love Everton and I’ve been proud to wear the shirt since the day I arrived,” Keane said. “I’m happy to extend my stay. The manager wants a strong, competitive squad and I still believe I’ve got a lot to offer.
“The last few years have been tough, but the future is exciting—for the players and our incredible fans. We’ve got a world-class new stadium on the horizon, and our form under the manager last season gives us plenty to be optimistic about. I’m looking forward to playing my part.”
