Kieran Maguire, speaking to talkSPORT, revealed that bigger clubs are benefiting from more lenient treatment, highlighting how Chelsea received a €20m fine from UEFA for financial irregularities—without facing the kind of points deductions seen at Everton or Nottingham Forest.
“There’s no appetite from club owners for tighter regulations because the current rules offer them a ‘get out of jail free card’,” Maguire said. “From Everton and Forest’s point of view, it’s the inconsistency that stings.”
The lack of transparency surrounding Manchester City’s case has also raised eyebrows, particularly after reports that Sky Sports were told not to comment on their legal issues—unlike the extensive coverage Everton and Forest faced.
The contrast is stark. While Everton were swiftly punished, Chelsea’s domestic spending under Todd Boehly continues to draw suspicion, yet without significant action from the Premier League. Fans and insiders alike feel this reveals a clear bias toward the so-called “big clubs.”
To Everton, it seems they were penalised not only for their infractions but also for their willingness to cooperate. Meanwhile, clubs with greater financial power appear to be bending the rules without facing similar consequences.
