Aberdeen manager Jimmy Thelin has strengthened his squad ahead of the new season by securing the services of French midfielder Adil Aouchiche on a season-long loan from Premier League side Sunderland. The deal includes an option for the Dons to make the move permanent next summer.
The 22-year-old attacking midfielder, who thrives in the number 10 role, has already linked up with his new teammates in Portugal for the final days of the club’s pre-season training camp.
Speaking about the new signing, Thelin said:
“We’re delighted to welcome Adil to the club. He’s a technically gifted player with excellent attacking instincts and creativity.
“Despite being just 22, he’s played at a high level in both France and England.
His experience and hunger to improve make him a really exciting addition. We’re confident Aberdeen will be a great platform for him to shine, and we’re looking forward to seeing what he can bring to the team this season.”
Aouchiche began his professional career with Paris Saint-Germain, making his senior debut at 17 in a 2-0 victory over Metz in August 2019. A few months later, he became PSG’s youngest-ever scorer in the Coupe de France, finding the net in a 6-0 win over Linas-Montlhéry.
He left PSG in June 2020 to join Saint-Étienne, where he made 77 appearances over two seasons before a move to Lorient in 2022. After a year in Ligue 1, he switched to Sunderland in 2023 and went on to feature 37 times for the Black Cats. Last January, he was loaned out to Portsmouth, where he played alongside Kusini Yengi.
Internationally, Aouchiche has been a regular for France at youth level, up to the U20s. He made headlines during the 2019 U17 Euros, where he scored a record-breaking nine goals and earned a spot in the Team of the Tournament.
Now preparing for a fresh challenge in Scotland, Aouchiche expressed his excitement at joining Aberdeen:
