Adil Aouchiche has revealed that the desire to feel “wanted” again played a key role in his decision to leave Sunderland, after sealing a season-long loan move to Aberdeen which includes an option to buy.
The 22-year-old attacking midfielder, who arrived at Sunderland from FC Lorient last summer, will spend the 2025–26 campaign at Pittodrie as part of Jimmy Thelin’s revamped squad. Aberdeen have confirmed the deal includes a purchase clause, with the fee reportedly set around £1.5 million.
Aouchiche featured 37 times for Sunderland in all competitions, contributing two goals and four assists. However, he found it difficult to secure consistent minutes, especially after a short loan spell at Portsmouth last season, during which he played under four different managers at Sunderland – Tony Mowbray, Michael Beale, Mike Dodds, and Régis Le Bris.
Looking to revive his form and confidence, the former PSG academy graduate is eager to make a fresh start in Scotland and embrace the challenge of European competition with Aberdeen.
“It’s a special feeling to sign for Aberdeen,” Aouchiche said. “Coming here felt like the right move. Everyone knows how big this club is, both in Scotland and in Europe. After speaking with the manager, I felt truly valued. He wants me to enjoy my time here and contribute my experience and qualities to the team.”
Reflecting on his Sunderland exit, Aouchiche added: “I’m ready to give everything to help my teammates and the club. I want to achieve something special here and make lasting memories.”
Aberdeen manager Jimmy Thelin was equally enthusiastic, stating: “Adil is a technically gifted player who adds creativity and attacking instinct to our midfield. Despite being only 22, he’s already played at a high level in France and England. His experience and hunger to improve make him a really exciting signing.”
Aouchiche has already joined his new teammates at their pre-season training camp in Portugal and will wear the number 10 shirt. While his preferred position is as an advanced midfielder, he can also operate on the wings.
A product of Paris Saint-Germain’s academy, Aouchiche made his senior debut at just 17 and became the club’s youngest-ever goalscorer in the Coupe de France. He later made 77 appearances for Saint-Étienne before spells at Lorient, Sunderland, and Portsmouth.
On the international stage, Aouchiche starred for France at youth level, scoring a record nine goals at the 2019 UEFA U17 European Championship and earning a place in the Team of the Tournament.
Sunderland’s sporting director Kristjaan Speakman previously noted Aouchiche’s desire for more game time and labelled the Aberdeen move “a great next step” in the player’s development.
