Sunderland shows no signs of slowing down in the transfer market this summer, pushing ahead with multiple new signings under head coach Regis Le Bris.
While Granit Xhaka’s high-profile arrival might have suggested the Black Cats were nearing the end of their summer business, Le Bris and his team are reportedly closing in on another exciting addition — Chelsea’s rising star Marc Guiu. Although there have been a few frustrating delays surrounding the striker’s loan move to the Stadium of Light, the deal still appears on track, with Guiu expected to join ahead of the new Premier League season.
But Sunderland’s attacking reinforcements may not stop there. Transfer rumours continue to swirl, with the club linked to several forwards in a bid to bolster their front line even further.
Sunderland Offered Chance to Sign £50m Striker
Among the more eye-catching rumours is Sunderland’s potential interest in RB Leipzig striker Lois Openda. According to Sky Sports Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, the newly promoted side has the prolific Belgian on their radar. However, securing a deal might be complicated, with Leipzig reportedly reluctant to lose more key players, particularly with Xavi Simons and Benjamin Sesko also linked with exits.
A potentially more realistic target could be former Premier League star Aleksandar Mitrovic. Despite his past association with rivals Newcastle United, Sunderland may see an opportunity too good to pass up. Journalist Graeme Bailey claims the Serbian forward is being offered to multiple Premier League clubs as he looks for a move away from Al-Hilal, with Darwin Núñez possibly heading to the Saudi Pro League in the opposite direction.
Both Sunderland and Leeds United have reportedly been approached about Mitrovic, who could offer the Black Cats a proven Premier League scorer — perhaps even more impactful than Openda.
Why Mitrovic Might Be a Better Fit Than Openda
While Openda has made waves in the Bundesliga with his recent performances, Mitrovic’s track record in English football may give him the edge. At 30, he brings significant experience and a proven eye for goal, having scored 123 times in English competitions — not to mention his impressive 47 goals in 51 appearances for Al-Hilal.
Although his least prolific spell came in the Premier League, Mitrovic has shown he can be lethal with the right service, as demonstrated by his sharp finishing against top-tier opponents like Arsenal. Former teammate Harrison Reed once described him as a “natural-born goalscorer,” and his stats back that up.
Openda, with 41 Bundesliga goals and a total of 105 in his career, is no slouch either. But Sunderland may never get another chance to land a proven “goal-scoring monster,” as described by Saudi-based journalist Matt Monaghan, like Mitrovic. Signing the Serbian could give Le Bris and Sunderland a major boost as they fight to stay in the Premier League.
