Super Eagles-eligible striker Chuba Akpom has opened up about his decision to join Ipswich Town on a season-long loan from Ajax, turning down multiple offers in the process.
The 29-year-old forward was a key figure in one of the summer’s most closely watched transfer sagas, with clubs like Birmingham City, Middlesbrough, and Olympiakos all competing for his signature.
According to TalkSport, Birmingham City had already reached an agreement on a loan deal and scheduled a medical. However, Ipswich swooped in late, completed their own medical, and finalized the move.
In an interview with TownTV, shared via Ipswich Town’s official website, Akpom explained that the club’s ambition and style of play made his decision an easy one.
“I was really excited when I heard about the interest, and I’m thrilled to join a club with such big ambitions,” he said. “I watch a lot of football and have always felt Ipswich’s style suits mine, so this move just felt right.”
Having played for Ajax and featured in the Champions League with Lille, Akpom believes his experience at the European level will benefit Ipswich in their push for promotion from the Championship.
“I’ve gained a lot over the past few years—playing in Europe and the Champions League—and those experiences have shaped me as both a player and a person,” he added.
A former Arsenal academy graduate, Akpom emphasized his desire to make a meaningful impact at Ipswich.
“I’m here to contribute as much as I can—on the field and in the dressing room—and I’ll bring a winning mentality to the squad.”
The loan deal reportedly includes a mandatory purchase clause worth around £7 million, which will be triggered if Ipswich secure promotion to the Premier League this season.
