Ipswich Town boss Kieran McKenna has admitted he was reluctant to let Nathan Broadhead leave this summer but understands the forward’s decision to move on.
The 27-year-old, a key figure in Ipswich’s back-to-back promotions to the Premier League, completed a £7.5 million move (plus add-ons) to Championship side Wrexham yesterday. While the deal represents solid business for a player in the final year of his contract, many Ipswich fans are sad to see the talented attacker depart.
“He’s a player we would’ve liked to keep, no question,” McKenna said. “He’s a top-quality player and someone who’s had a really positive journey with us over the last couple of seasons.”
McKenna revealed that Broadhead had expressed his desire to move from early in pre-season, after receiving what the manager described as an “incredible” personal offer from Wrexham.
“Nathan was upfront from the start — the offer from Wrexham was life-changing for him, and it’s a club he has strong ties to, being close to home,” McKenna explained. “His desire to take that opportunity was clear, and in the end, it was difficult to take a different path.
“Of course, he was under contract and remained an important part of our squad plans. We wanted him here, but ultimately, his wish to leave was very strong.”
Despite the disappointment, McKenna acknowledged the positives of the deal, both for Broadhead and the club.
“It’s a great move for him personally, and a good return for the club considering we signed him for £1.5 million from Everton,” he said. “He leaves with fond memories and the support of the fans. I know everyone at Ipswich wishes him the best.”
Looking ahead, McKenna stressed the focus now is on finding the right replacement.
“We’re disappointed with how it came about, yes, but our job now is to replace his quality and push on for a successful season,” he added.
