Despite Securing Vital Win, Former Leicester Star Unimpressed by Marti Cifuentes’ Side

Leicester City returned to winning ways with a narrow victory over Charlton Athletic, bouncing back from last weekend’s heavy defeat to Preston North End. While the result was positive, the performance raised concerns—especially for one former Foxes favourite.

A moment of individual brilliance from Abdul Fatawu secured the 1-0 win, as his superb strike proved to be the difference. However, it was far from a dominant display. Leicester were under considerable pressure for large spells, with Nathan Jones’ Charlton side pushing hard and even having a goal ruled out.

Despite the three points, former Leicester striker David Nugent was unimpressed with what he saw from the current squad. On BBC co-commentary duty, Nugent criticised the Foxes’ defensive organisation, particularly during the closing stages of the match.

“It’s mistake after mistake for Leicester,” Nugent remarked. “Every set-piece is the same from Charlton, and every time they’ve managed to get a head on it.”

Though critical of the team’s overall display, Nugent did reserve praise for match-winner Fatawu, saying: “It looked like the shot wasn’t on, but he just shifted left to create space. It hit the side netting—unsaveable. A great finish.”

Leicester Need Greater Defensive Discipline Under Cifuentes

While the result keeps Leicester’s promotion hopes on track, the manner of the win was far from convincing. Cifuentes’ men held on under pressure, and fortune played a role in preserving their clean sheet. Against a more clinical opponent, the outcome could easily have been different.

The disjointed defensive display should serve as a wake-up call for the Foxes boss. With tougher fixtures ahead, Cifuentes will need to instil greater structure and discipline into his backline. If Leicester are to maintain momentum and push for promotion, tightening up at the back will be essential.
