Derby County Still Searching for First Win as They Face Tough Test at Ipswich

Derby County are still chasing their first victory of the 2025/26 Championship season and face a challenging trip to Portman Road this weekend as they take on Ipswich Town.

Although Ipswich have claimed wins in their last two meetings with the Rams, they too have struggled for consistency since their relegation from the Premier League. Meanwhile, Derby are making moves in the transfer market, with Max Johnston close to signing and Lewis Travis expected to follow him to Pride Park.

However, if Derby are to come away with a result, they’ll need to be at their best—particularly when it comes to stopping one man: Sammie Szmodics.

Szmodics Could Be the Game-Changer

Ipswich’s attack remains dangerous despite a slow start to the season. Chuba Akpom and George Hirst will pose threats, but it’s Szmodics who may prove decisive, especially with extra motivation to impress against his former coach, John Eustace.

Still looking for his first goal of the season, Szmodics recently returned from an arm injury suffered in a 1-1 draw against Southampton. He made his comeback last weekend against Preston and will be eager to open his account. Last season, Szmodics was sensational—netting 27 goals in 44 Championship matches to keep Blackburn afloat.

Eustace, now at Derby, knows exactly what Szmodics brings to the table. His ability to drive quick transitions and find space between the lines makes him a dangerous opponent—something Eustace will need his defence to be fully prepared for.

A Respectful Reunion

Saturday will also mark a reunion between Szmodics and Eustace, just over a year since they parted ways. The 29-year-old attacker has spoken highly of his former manager, crediting him for his support during a delicate period at Blackburn last summer when he was pushing for a Premier League move.

Reflecting on that time, Szmodics revealed in an interview (via StillTalkingPodcast) that he had refused to take part in pre-season matches to protect a move to Ipswich. Eustace responded with empathy and professionalism, backing Szmodics rather than punishing him.

“He could’ve told me off,” Szmodics said, “but instead he protected me and helped however he could.”

Despite his actions putting him on the bench at the start of last season, Szmodics quickly proved his worth—scoring off the bench in the opener and netting twice in the next match, which reignited Ipswich’s interest and eventually led to his move.

Now, back at Portman Road and facing his former boss, Szmodics will be looking to make his mark—and possibly be the player who denies Derby their long-awaited first win of the season.
