Cyriel Dessers Cleared to Play Ahead of Champions League Clash

Rangers manager Russell Martin has confirmed that Cyriel Dessers is fit and available for selection ahead of the UEFA Champions League playoff second-leg clash against Club Brugge — a welcome update for both Rangers and Super Eagles supporters.

Speaking at the pre-match press conference, Martin stated: “Yes, he is here, and he’s good to go.”

The Nigerian striker has missed Rangers’ last three matches, including the 3-1 home defeat to Brugge, which left their Champions League hopes hanging in the balance.

His return is timely, as Rangers have struggled to find consistency in attack. Since arriving at the club, the 30-year-old forward has been a key figure in Martin’s tactical setup, offering physical presence, the ability to hold up play, and a calmness in high-pressure moments.

Dessers’ inclusion adds much-needed flexibility to the frontline and could provide a morale boost for the squad.

While Martin did not confirm if the striker would start or come off the bench, simply having him available is considered a positive development.

The news also holds importance on the international front. Though Dessers has made eight friendly appearances for Nigeria, he remains eligible to represent Belgium, his country of birth.

Nonetheless, he has been named in Nigeria’s provisional 31-man squad for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and South Africa.

With his fitness restored, Nigeria manager Eric Chelle can now count on last season’s Scottish Premiership top scorer for these vital qualifying fixtures.
