Now, according to Gazzetta dello Sport, Sunderland are reportedly pursuing Lloyd Kelly, just months after he left their fierce rivals, Newcastle United.
Sunderland and Crystal Palace in talks with Juventus
The Italian outlet claims both Sunderland and Crystal Palace have initiated discussions with Juventus over a deal for the 26-year-old centre-back.
Palace are in the market for a new defender amid concerns that Marc Guehi could depart before the window closes. Juventus, meanwhile, are believed to be open to letting Kelly go, having recently made inquiries to PSG about Lucas Beraldo as a potential replacement during ongoing talks over Randal Kolo Muani.
Kelly joined Juventus on loan from Newcastle in February, with a £20 million obligation to buy that was triggered in June. The defender made 11 Serie A starts last season and featured in Juventus’ 2-0 win over Parma on Sunday to start the new season.
Potential embarrassment for Newcastle
Should Sunderland secure Kelly’s signature and he excels in the Premier League, it could reflect poorly on Newcastle. Despite interest from Tottenham, the Magpies gave Kelly just four Premier League starts during his short stint at the club, not offering him much of a chance to establish himself.
While Newcastle turned a quick profit—signing him for free in June 2024 and selling him for £20 million—it might still sting if he thrives just down the road at the Stadium of Light.
