Ipswich Town Eye Manchester City Defender as McKenna Looks to Strengthen Squad

Ipswich Town haven’t had the smoothest start to the season, with manager Kieran McKenna still looking to reinforce his squad before the transfer window closes.

The Tractor Boys are set to face Derby County this weekend—a side they’ve fared well against in recent meetings. However, Ipswich have yet to register a win in their first three Championship matches.

Despite showing moments of promise in their clash with Southampton, they suffered a 1-0 defeat to Preston North End last Saturday, leaving McKenna visibly frustrated.

With time still remaining in the transfer window, Ipswich are actively seeking reinforcements and have now turned their attention to Manchester City’s young right-back, Issa Kaboré.

They are not alone in their interest—Championship rivals Leicester City are also keen on the 24-year-old.

Kaboré, a Burkina Faso international, could be available for a permanent move, though Manchester City are reportedly open to a loan arrangement as well.

Overseas interest is also growing, with Hamburg (Germany) and Paris FC (France) tracking the defender.

Ipswich have already strengthened their attack with the acquisition of Chuba Akpom, and attention has now shifted to bolstering the defense.

Kaboré would bring valuable experience, having spent last season on loan at Luton Town during their promotion-winning campaign.

Since signing for Manchester City from KV Mechelen in 2020, Kaboré has yet to make his senior debut for the club and has been loaned out five times.

His time at Luton was particularly notable, earning praise from manager Rob Edwards after bouncing back from a mistake against Aston Villa to deliver a standout performance against Crystal Palace.

Speaking in March 2024, Edwards told Luton Today:

“Our supporters love him because they can see how much he gives. He’s always at full throttle.

I often have to tell him in training, ‘Issa, steady on,’ because he hits match-level intensity even the day before a game. He’s brilliant, and his response to that earlier setback was outstanding.”

With defensive reinforcements a clear priority, Ipswich could see Kaboré as a key addition to help turn their season around.
