Kalvin Phillips Tipped for Leeds United Return as Midfield Injuries Mount

Leeds United could be set to re-sign one of their most iconic recent players, with reports suggesting Kalvin Phillips may soon return to Elland Road.

The midfielder, currently with Manchester City, is reportedly open to a move back to Yorkshire, with the likelihood of a deal being described as having a “good chance.”

According to Leeds United News, a midfield injury crisis just three games into the 2025/26 season has left the club scrambling for reinforcements.

Injuries to Ao Tanaka and Ethan Ampadu—both suffering knee issues—have ruled them out for at least a fortnight, leaving manager Daniel Farke with just Anton Stach, Sean Longstaff, and Ilia Gruev as available central midfield options.

This shortage could pave the way for a reunion with Phillips, who has endured a difficult stint at Manchester City since his £45 million move from Leeds in 2022.

Despite his high-profile transfer, the 28-year-old has struggled to find form, with unsuccessful loan spells at West Ham United and Ipswich Town compounding his frustration.

Now, with three years left on his City contract and limited interest elsewhere, a return to familiar surroundings at Elland Road appears increasingly possible.

Phillips, who joined Leeds’ academy at the age of 14, is believed to be keen on a return to the club where he made his name.

Journalist Graeme Bailey commented on the situation, stating:
“Leeds are keeping very close checks on Kalvin Phillips – I’m told Manchester City might be looking to pay up his contract. There is still a good chance he ends up at Elland Road.”

Leeds would likely need Phillips to accept a significant wage reduction, given his reported £140,000-a-week salary, and his injury history could be a concern.

Nevertheless, his deep connection with the club and experience at the top level could make him a valuable addition.

Phillips made 234 appearances for the Whites, playing a crucial role in their return to the Premier League and their resurgence under Marcelo Bielsa.

His performances earned him international recognition, including a standout role in England’s run to the EURO 2020 final alongside Declan Rice.

While he lifted the treble with City in his debut season at the Etihad, it is his commanding midfield displays in Leeds’ top-flight return that fans will remember most.
