Kenzo Goudmijn: Championship Experience Made Me Stronger Ahead of Go Ahead Eagles Move

Kenzo Goudmijn believes his time in the Championship has significantly strengthened him, as he reflected on his recent loan move to Go Ahead Eagles — a switch he says was clearly the best choice for his career.

The Derby County midfielder has joined the Eredivisie side on a season-long loan after finding first-team opportunities limited at Pride Park.

With Derby needing to streamline their squad before submitting it to the EFL, the club agreed to let the 23-year-old depart.

Just over a year after arriving from AZ Alkmaar, Goudmijn returns to the Netherlands, where he’s expected to play a key role in a demanding campaign. He has already been included in the Eagles’ Europa League squad.

“I’ve played a lot of games across all my previous clubs, including high-intensity competitions like the Europa League with AZ and the Championship with Derby,” Goudmijn said. “That experience has made me a lot stronger, both in terms of my game and physically.”

“Once I realized this was the best step for me, the decision came quickly — I wanted to play for Go Ahead Eagles this season. I’m really looking forward to playing in this amazing stadium and helping the team have a successful year.”

Goudmijn made an impressive start to life at Derby, scoring in back-to-back wins against Bristol City and Cardiff. However, as Derby found themselves dragged into a relegation battle, his minutes became limited towards the end of the campaign.

He hasn’t featured so far this season and was omitted from the squad that faced Ipswich at the weekend. Despite that, Goudmijn remains eager to recapture the form he showed after joining the Rams.

“I’m a midfielder who likes to take initiative and add something extra with the right pass,” he explained. “I’ve always thought this was a great club. I really enjoyed the atmosphere whenever I played here before.”

“This season will be a big challenge with the Europa League, Eredivisie, and domestic cup matches, but if you take care of your body, you can manage it. I’m glad I’ve already experienced that level — and I truly hope I can make an impact here.”
