“Honestly, it was a disaster,” he said. “I was listening to the game thinking, ‘brilliant, clean sheet incoming.’ It got to the 91st minute and I thought I was safe.

“Gudmundsson’s only £4 million in FPL, he’s cheap, and had been doing well. Even if you concede, you still get some points for defensive contributions.

“But an own goal? Zero points. I actually threw my phone.”

While Richards vented his frustration, others showed a bit more understanding. Lineker and Shearer also discussed the incident, and former Leeds defender Tony Dorigo sympathised with Gudmundsson — although he reserved more concern for another player on the pitch.

According to Jonny Cooper of Opta, Gudmundsson’s own goal contributed to Leeds matching a 30-year-old unwanted club record — further compounding a difficult night.
