Aston Villa Still Goalless After Four League Matches

Aston Villa’s struggles in front of goal continued as they played out a dull 0-0 draw against Everton at the Hill Dickinson Stadium — their first visit to the ground.

The result means Villa remain both winless and goalless after their opening four league fixtures, marking the first time in the club’s history they’ve failed to score in their first four league games. By comparison, they had already netted seven times by this point last season.

But the concerns at Villa Park go beyond just the lack of goals. The team appears to be lacking in creativity as well, generating fewer chances and lower-quality opportunities than they were at the same stage last season.

Former chief scout Mick Brown believes that pressure is quietly mounting on manager Unai Emery, despite his previous successes.

Speaking to Football Insider, Brown said, “Emery has built up a lot of credit at Aston Villa, but the question is: how long does that last? Four games without a win or a goal is worrying—what if it becomes five, six, or even seven?”

He added, “At some stage, decisions will need to be made if the team’s form doesn’t pick up. Regardless of who you are, pressure builds when results don’t come.”

Brown acknowledged that Emery still retains the backing of the club’s board, largely thanks to his achievements since joining — including qualifying for European competitions. However, he warned that goodwill can only last so long when performances and results begin to dip.

Emery’s Job Still Safe — For Now

Despite the slow start, Emery’s position is not thought to be under immediate threat. Villa’s summer was disrupted by a challenging transfer window and financial constraints under Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

Nevertheless, they managed to retain key players, including goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez — who was heavily linked with Manchester United — as well as Ollie Watkins and Morgan Rogers.

The arrivals of Harvey Elliott and Jadon Sancho are expected to inject new life into the squad, and there’s optimism surrounding Evann Guessand, who arrives after scoring 12 goals in Ligue 1 for Nice last season.

Ultimately, Emery has transformed Villa from relegation candidates into consistent European contenders over the past three seasons.

His track record still earns him patience and time to rectify the team’s current issues — though results will need to improve soon to keep pressure at bay.
