UEFA Fines Crystal Palace Following Europa League Demotion
Crystal Palace have been hit with a new sanction from UEFA after being relegated from the Europa League due to a breach of multi-club ownership regulations.
The Eagles earned a Europa League spot by winning last season’s FA Cup. However, UEFA ruled they were ineligible for the competition under its ownership rules and moved them to the Europa Conference League instead.
Despite Palace’s appeal, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) upheld the original decision, allowing Nottingham Forest to take their place in the Europa League.
Oliver Glasner’s side kicked off their Conference League campaign with a two-legged play-off against Norwegian club Fredrikstad, securing a narrow 1-0 aggregate victory after winning the first leg at Selhurst Park.
Controversy followed during that match in August when Palace supporters displayed a banner mocking UEFA, featuring the term “UEFA MAFIA” over the governing body’s logo alongside a Euro symbol. The same banner later appeared at Wembley during the Community Shield and at Stamford Bridge for Palace’s Premier League opener against Chelsea.
In response, UEFA has fined Crystal Palace €10,000 (£8,670) for bringing the organization into disrepute and for displaying a message deemed inappropriate for a sporting event under UEFA’s code of conduct.
Despite the off-field issues, Palace have secured their place in the Conference League group stage. Manager Oliver Glasner praised the achievement:
“It’s a huge accomplishment to reach the group stage,” he said. “That was our second goal for the season, and to achieve it by the end of August is fantastic.
“Our first target was winning the Community Shield – which we did – and now, even with all the noise around the demotion, we’ve reached our next objective.
We defended very well and didn’t allow them any chances. Of course, we know we must improve our possession play, but the most important thing is we’re through.”
