Glasner Demands More from Romain Esse After Palace’s Penalty Shootout Win Over Millwall
Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner has called on Romain Esse to improve his performances following Palace’s dramatic 4-2 penalty shootout victory against Millwall in the EFL Cup third round.
Esse, facing his former club, struggled to make an impact at Selhurst Park and was substituted at half-time in what was just his second appearance of the season. Glasner appeared dissatisfied with the 20-year-old’s showing and confirmed post-match that he plans to speak with the winger, admitting he was “not pleased” with the youngster’s display.
Esse signed for Crystal Palace from Millwall in January on a five-and-a-half-year deal worth a reported £12 million, potentially rising to £14.5 million with performance-related add-ons. Since arriving, he has featured only 11 times for the Eagles, including a single Premier League start, where he scored on his debut during a 2-1 loss to Brentford.
Palace Progress Thanks to Benitez Heroics
Despite Esse’s disappointing performance, Palace progressed to the next round thanks to the efforts of debutant goalkeeper Walter Benitez. The Argentine shot-stopper was the standout player in the shootout, saving penalties from Tristan Crama and Aidomo Emakhu.
Chris Richards had earlier put Palace ahead in the 72nd minute, finishing from close range following a corner, but Millwall struck back in stoppage time of extra time through Ryan Leonard, who headed home a corner from Jack Howland.
Palace converted all four of their penalties, securing the win and extending their unbeaten streak in all competitions to 16 matches.
Glasner also handed a first-team debut to 18-year-old French defender Jaydee Canvot, who joined from Toulouse in the summer transfer window.
Crystal Palace, currently ninth in the Premier League after four matches, will look to continue their strong form when they travel to face West Ham on Saturday in another London derby.
