“Critical Mistake”- Eustace’s Ambition at Risk – Derby Legend Uncovers Transfer Issue Fans Can’t Ignore”
Dean Saunders Praises John Eustace but Warns Derby Must Keep Squad Intact to Progress
Derby County legend Dean Saunders has praised the impressive work of manager John Eustace at Pride Park but stressed that holding on to key players will be crucial if the club wants to continue moving forward.
Following a busy summer in which 13 players arrived and the same number departed, Derby are now focused on building momentum in their second season back in the Championship.
After Eustace took over in February and steered the club to safety, there’s hope that a more stable, less stressful campaign lies ahead—especially after some smart transfer business.
While many fans would view a mid-table finish as a step in the right direction, the long-term vision remains clear: a return to the Premier League.
But Saunders believes that won’t happen unless Derby keep their core squad intact.
“John Eustace masterminded Derby’s survival last season, and it was seriously impressive to watch,” Saunders told WDM Bingo.
“They’ve had an okay start this season—five points from five games isn’t bad—and the win at West Brom was a massive result to get things going.”
He believes the team will continue to improve under Eustace’s guidance.
“John’s shown he’s a top manager over the last few years, and I expect Derby to finish much higher up the table. But to do that, you need the money to compete with the bigger clubs in the league. Derby are a huge club, but they can’t currently match the spending power of some others.”
“The key is keeping the players John wants. You don’t necessarily need to spend millions, but you do need to retain your best talent and pay them competitively. If Derby keep losing top players every summer, it’s going to be difficult to make any real progress.”
