Blackburn vs Ipswich Abandoned After 80 Minutes Due to Heavy Rain – Replay Expected
The Championship clash between Blackburn Rovers and Ipswich Town at Ewood Park was abandoned in the 80th minute due to torrential rain, despite Blackburn holding a 1-0 lead at the time.
Former PGMOL chief and ex-FIFA referee Keith Hackett spoke exclusively to Football Insider and explained what both sets of fans can expect following the game’s cancellation.
As first reported by Football Insider on 15 September, Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna was seen at West Ham amid growing speculation surrounding Graham Potter’s future at the London club. However, on 19 September, it was revealed that Frank Lampard is no longer being considered for the West Ham managerial role, following the Hammers’ latest defeat to Crystal Palace.
Meanwhile, Ipswich and McKenna now look set to make another trip to Lancashire, with supporters advised to hold onto their tickets for the replayed fixture.
Frustration for Blackburn After Match Halted Despite Lead
Blackburn welcomed Ipswich for their sixth Championship fixture of the season, with the visitors aiming to build on Jaden Philogene’s standout performance against Sheffield United on 12 September.
The game saw a key moment early in the second half when Jacob Greaves was shown a red card in the 49th minute for a last-man professional foul. Todd Cantwell converted the resulting penalty to give Blackburn the lead.
However, heavy rain soon followed and made playing conditions impossible, forcing referee Stephen Martin to abandon the match with just 10 minutes remaining.
Red Card Will Stand, Replay Likely – Hackett Weighs In
Despite the match being called off, Jacob Greaves’ red card is set to stand, meaning he will still serve a suspension when the game is eventually replayed. Blackburn, understandably, are disappointed to have been denied a potential three points.
Speaking to Football Insider, Keith Hackett supported the referee’s decision and explained the likely next steps:
“The game will be rescheduled, and I would hope Blackburn Rovers allow fans to use their existing tickets for the rearranged match. While it’s not a legal requirement, it would be a fair gesture from the club.
“As for the red card, the sanction remains valid and will apply when the game is replayed. It’s a tough situation – what a journey this has been for Ipswich fans.
“I’d be very surprised if the match isn’t replayed. Stephen Martin is one of the most experienced referees available, and I’m sure he did everything he could to allow the game to continue. Unfortunately, the weather had the final say.”
